I’m Sam Bishop, an oil painter based in Clinton, Mississippi (Jackson area). I paint quiet, everyday moments: people in fields, on the beach, in the snow and in the garden, plus Southern skies and woodlands in golden-hour light. Painting helps me look past the darkness to the beauty and hope in ordinary life. Original paintings are for sale on Saatchi Art; open-edition canvas prints, tote bags and phone cases are on Etsy. Click any painting below to buy it. Local to the Jackson area or looking for something specific? Email me at sambishopworks@gmail.com.

About

Having grown up in New Mexico, lived 45 minutes from the Canadian border as well as on both coasts, I recently settled in Mississippi and am loving it. Originally studying the performing arts and dabbling in film, I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design with a minor in studio art at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It was during these college years that I found my love of drawing and painting.

Living with mental illness, painting is therapeutic and helps me rise above and explore not just the darkness I feel but the overwhelming beauty and light in this world. This light juxtaposes the darkness (both literally and figuratively) and causes the viewer to see clearly the drama and hope that is a part of everyday life that can often be overlooked. I hope that my paintings not only impart beauty but this underlying hope, and with it peace.

“the woman in the field”

July 13, 2020

This piece continues a theme I have in a lot of my work where I explore “peace.”
Peace is something that everyone of us strives for every day or our life, I believe, whether it’s through spirituality, hard work, hedonistic activities…really anything we do in our lives is in pursuit of some semblance of peace. Peace with ourselves if not with people and things around us, and even God Himself. This scene evokes a semblance of that peace, for me.
